II. Introduction to the UKMT Series Competitions

The UKMT organizes three levels of competitions: the Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC), the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC), and the Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC). Chinese students participate more frequently in the SMC (Senior Mathematical Challenge).

III. UKMT Tournament Structure

IV. UKMT Basic Event Schedule

1. Target Audience for UKMT Competitions

JMC: Junior Mathematical Thinking Challenge, for students in Year 7 (Grade 7) and below.

IMC: Intermediate Mathematical Thinking Challenge, for students in Year 10 (Grade 10) and below.

SMC: Senior Mathematical Thinking Challenge, for students in Year 12 (Grade 12) and below.

BMO: British Mathematical Olympiad, for students in Year 12 and below.

2. UKMT Exam Formats

JMC: 25 multiple-choice questions. Questions 1-15 are worth 5 points each, questions 16-25 are worth 6 points each. 1 point is deducted for incorrect answers to questions 16-20, and 2 points are deducted for incorrect answers to questions 21-25.

VI. The prestige of the UKMT tournament

High Impact

The UKMT is the UK's largest and most influential national mathematics competition, attracting over 700,000 students from more than 6,000 schools across the UK each year. Excellent SMC results will significantly boost your chances of receiving offers from top UK universities.

High Award Rate

The UKMT has three levels corresponding to different grade levels, with increasing difficulty. The SMC award rate is as high as 66%. For high school students applying to overseas universities, good results will enhance your personal statement and serve as strong evidence of your problem-solving skills and enjoyment of challenges during interviews. University mathematics professors are very familiar with this exam and can use its results to assess a student's mathematical abilities.

Improves Mathematical Skills and Logical Thinking Skills

The competition questions involve many logical and creative ideas, improving mathematical skills and logical thinking abilities in the process of solving them. This competition allows you to enjoy the process of learning advanced mathematics and also serves as a benchmark for whether advanced mathematics is a suitable field for you.

Can be used as practice for the AMC preliminary competition

The AMC 10/12 competition is held in November, while the UKMT SMC competition is held in October. Both exams consist of multiple-choice questions, and there is a high degree of overlap in the knowledge points covered. It might be worthwhile to prepare for both competitions at the same time.
